From Times Wire Reports

An Amarillo jury began deliberations after lawyers for Texas cattlemen argued the beef industry lost $11 million because of “a bunch of falsehoods shot out of Chicago” by TV talk show hostess Oprah Winfrey. The attorneys urged the jury to hold Winfrey liable for a 1996 episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in which she and a guest suggested that American beef could spread mad-cow disease to people. Winfrey’s attorney, Charles Babcock, said that statements made on the show were fact or legally protected opinion or rhetoric.
