Daschle Mum, and for a Reason
Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) was asked Wednesday whether he had any thoughts about the possibility that the White House might invoke executive privilege to prevent top aides from testifying before a grand jury.
“Well, if I do, I’ll get subpoenaed,” Daschle responded as reporters laughed. Then, glancing at a television camera, he added, “That’s all I’m going to say, Ken.”
Asked for a serious answer, the South Dakota Democrat said, “That is my serious answer. I don’t want to get subpoenaed.”
Independent counsel Kenneth W. Starr has been subpoenaing Clinton administration officials to try to learn what they have been telling reporters about his staff. Democrats say the subpoenas are an attempt at intimidation.
