Home Improvements Rule May Be Eased
Foothill residents who want to make minor changes to their properties, such as patio covers or small room additions, may get relief from costly and cumbersome county requirements.
The Board of Supervisors Tuesday will consider changes to development rules that govern the southeast-county unincorporated area, allowing homeowners to make minor changes to their properties with only a building permit.
Current rules require a site-development permit and dedication of two-thirds of the land to the county.
The development rules, adopted in 1991, were intended to protect the environmentally sensitive area.
But the cumbersome rules meant that many homeowners were doing minor work on their properties without any county approvals.
The proposed change calls for a six-month amnesty period for homeowners who have already completed work to seek permits.
