The City Council recently laid out its goals for 1998, and promoting a second commercial airport in Orange County topped the list.

“This is a very important issue for Newport Beach residents and we need to stay on top of it,” said Mayor Tom Edwards.

In addition to disseminating information over whether a commercial airport should be built at El Toro Marine Corps Air Station, city officials said they would continue to monitor noise and traffic at John Wayne Airport to ensure it is in compliance with court-ordered limits.

Council members also agreed they should move forward with the annexation of Newport Coast, improve community outreach and improve the water quality in Newport Harbor and the Upper Newport Bay.
