Money Isn’t the Way to Help Panhandlers

Re: “Give-and-Take on Dealing with Panhandlers” (Nov. 16):

The number of homeless people who panhandle in downtown Ventura is a great concern of business owners and residents, especially now, as we move ahead with the structural and economic revitalization of the area.

We need well-thought-out answers to address the many problems and needs of the poor who hang out and panhandle in the downtown area.

The Historic Downtown Community Council is focused on these complex issues and hopes to be a partner in working with the city, the police, business and residents to find solutions.

The area we are first focusing on is panhandling--specifically, educating the public about how to respond in the most helpful way when approached by a panhandler. We are about to release pamphlets and posters, which will be placed in most downtown business.

It is crucial that we do two things: Find better solutions for the needs of the homeless and educate the public to help by not giving in to panhandlers’ requests for money.

Most of the money given to panhandlers is used to buy alcohol or drugs, not food or clothing. I believe that if most people knew that, they would think twice about giving money to feed the addiction of the panhandler.
