IRS Reform: Fed up with the Internal Revenue Service? So is Congressman Howard “Buck” McKeon (R-Santa Clarita), who will hold a hearing in Palmdale on Thursday to take testimony on IRS abuses. It will be similar to the Washington hearings that sparked so many calls for IRS reform. The event will take place at Palmdale City Hall, 38300 Sierra Highway, at 7 p.m.

* COACH RESIGNS: Jim Fenwick, who only a year ago said he had fulfilled a dream by becoming Cal State Northridge’s head football coach, quit on Monday to become offensive coordinator at New Mexico. Fenwick, 45, built Pierce and Valley community colleges into national powers. He was 6-6 in his only season at CSUN. C1

* TOP STOCKS: Most of the 86 publicly traded companies headquartered, or with major operations, in the Valley had a prosperous 1997. The best local stock: Tekelec, of Calabasas, whose shares jumped 287%. D9A
