A committee organized to find a new police chief for Inglewood has selected three finalists.

The candidates, whose names have not been revealed, will be interviewed Tuesday by the City Council. The candidates also will be interviewed by residents at a Jan. 20 community forum. The City Council will select a new police chief at its Jan. 21 meeting.

The search for a new chief began last fall when the committee, headed by City Councilman Garland Hardeman, advertised the position in brochures and trade magazines.

Forty-one candidates responded. Six applicants were from the Inglewood Police Department, Hardeman said Wednesday. None of the Inglewood candidates made the final cut, including Inglewood’s acting police chief, Lt. Alex Perez.

The chief’s position has been vacant since early last year, when Chief Oliver Thompson announced that he would step down after five years on the job.

The police chief’s position pays up to $125,000 a year plus a car allowance and benefits.
