From Times Wire Reports

The former editorial business director of the Los Angeles Times was sentenced Wednesday to four years in prison for stealing at least $800,000 from the newspaper.

Charles Boesch, 53, of Chino Hills pleaded guilty last month to a charge of grand theft. Prosecutors contended that he approved payment for freelance articles that were never published and took the money.

Along with the prison term, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Robert O’Neil ordered Boesch to pay $778,550 in restitution.

Boesch’s former son-in-law, Michael Wayne Coburn, 27, has pleaded no contest to a charge stemming from his involvement in the scheme. He is to be sentenced April 7 to up to three years in prison.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Brent Collier said Boesch carried out the theft between Oct. 17, 1993 and Jan. 29, 1997, approving invoices for freelance articles and having the money sent to other people, including Coburn.

A third defendant, 20-year-old Jacqueline Barrios, is due in court Friday for a preliminary hearing on the charge against her.

Boesch began working for The Times in 1963. His employment was terminated in July.
