Suspect Sought in Fall Shooting Spree

Police are asking the public for help in the search for a man suspected in a three-hour spree of random shootings Oct. 24 that left one man dead and two others injured, including a 3-year-old boy.

Jose Alfredo Aviles, 22, was identified by witnesses as the gunman who killed Hector Manuel Valencia, 30, of Anaheim. Valencia was stopped at a red light on McFadden Avenue was struck in the head by gunfire.

Aviles, identified by police as a gang member, also allegedly fired at three other vehicles during the night, wounding 3-year-old Alberto Valenzuela of Santa Ana and Luis Mondragon, 21, of Garden Grove. Mondragon, although shot in the torso, chased his attacker and rammed his car, forcing the gunman to flee on foot after again firing at Mondragon.

A police spokesman said the shootings appeared to be “completely random, without any provocation.”

Aviles is described as Latino, 5-foot-5, 160 pounds, with short black hair and brown eyes. He has “Los 187” tattooed above his left eyebrow. He is considered armed and dangerous, and anyone with information should call Santa Ana Police Investigator Joe Perez at (714) 245-8317.
