CHP Communications Center Gets Funding

The California Highway Patrol has received $8 million from Caltrans to build a 36,000-square-foot communications center at Sand Canyon Avenue and Marine Way.

“We are in the planning stages of the project, and during the first quarter of the year 2000, we anticipate moving into this new, state-of-the-art facility,” CHP Lt. Dwight McKenna said.

The department’s communications center has operated at the Caltrans District 12 office in Santa Ana. But Caltrans needs more space because of a new traffic monitoring computer system.

“Caltrans will still retain their office there, but a portion of Caltrans traffic management and maintenance operations and CHP’s communications center will be housed in the new facility,” McKenna said.

Other similar CHP communications centers are in San Bernardino, San Diego, Los Angeles, Fresno, Sacramento and San Francisco, he said.
