Barry grimaced Wednesday night when his son Brent passed up a dunk in the final minute of the Clippers’ 110-102 victory over the Vancouver Grizzlies to throw a wrap-around pass to rookie Maurice Taylor.

Barry threw the ball away.

“If he made a play like that in a tight game, you’d want to string him up by his thumbs,” Rick Barry said. “Brent’s not stupid. He knows how to play the game. I don’t think he would have tried to make that play if it was a close game.

“I just believe he’s a much more effective basketball player when he playing in a game that allows him the opportunity to have the ball going up the floor on the move because he’s extremely creative.

“It’s not showboating. Brent just has a tremendous flair for the game that he has had ever since he was a little kid. He would do things and the coaches would go nuts and put him on the bench back in those days.

“He’s never had a coach who has allowed him to play the game the way he instinctively knows he can. He has a lot of things he can do that he hasn’t been allowed to do. He’s like the tip of the iceberg.”

Clipper forward Lorenzen Wright, who has sat out three games because of strained ligaments in his left knee, hopes to play against the Lakers tonight at the Sports Arena.

“He’s listed what I call ‘DD,’ daily doubtful,” Coach Bill Fitch said. “It’s like the daily double. He’s got a weakness in the knee, what he has to do now is rest it and protect it. If he gets hit again it could turn into something more significant.”
