Cheerleading Program Offered for Boys, Girls

For the second year, the San Fernando Recreation and Community Services Department will offer a cheerleading program in conjunction with its youth basketball league.

“This is really a good program for the kids,” said Nicole De La Cerda of the recreation department. “It’s an opportunity for the kids to learn cheers, drill and dance routines for a lot less money than other programs like this.”

The registration fee for the cheerleading program or the basketball league is $15, De La Cerda said. Also, youths who earned a B average or higher during the past school term qualify for a good-student discount and can sign up for $10.

Registration is underway for the programs, which will begin in February and run through April, officials said. The cheerleading program is open to boys and girls between 6 and 14 and the basketball league is open to boys and girls between 5 and 17.

All participants will receive a uniform shirt and an award, officials said.

De La Cerda said those who volunteer to coach the basketball teams are concerned more with developing skills and promoting positive attitudes than with winning games.

Registration will be accepted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday at the Recreation and Community Services Department office, 208 Park Ave.
