Wetlands Issue Could Stall Hellman Ranch

The future of the Hellman Ranch development, a project expected to bring an 18-hole golf course, 70 homes and dozens of acres of saltwater wetland restoration to a 231-acre parcel on Seal Beach Boulevard, could be in jeopardy.

City Councilwoman Gwen Forsythe said Monday that she has been told the California Coastal Commission could deny the project because it wants more freshwater and saltwater marsh restoration on the site.

The developer could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

Forsythe, a strong advocate of the project, said she has spoken with several members of the coastal commission to express the council’s support of the development plan.

Approved last year, the plan was thought to be the end of bitter battles over the future of the contested land.

The project is on the commission’s February agenda but could be postponed.
