Community Seeks ZIP Code of Its Own

A local leader is pushing for a new ZIP Code in an effort to further distinguish the unincorporated community from neighboring Los Alamitos.

Rossmoor shares the 90720 ZIP Code and a post office with Los Alamitos.

But James Montemer, president of the Rossmoor Community Services District, listed a new ZIP Code among his goals for 1998.

“We’re a whole different community than Los Alamitos,” he said.

A different ZIP Code might make it easier for real estate agents to identify and sell properties in Rossmoor, which has higher property values, said James S. Mocalis, general manager of the district.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. Postal Service said it is unlikely that a change will be made. ZIP Codes are assigned for the purpose of sorting mail, not community identity, said Terri Bouffiou, with the U.S. Postal Service in Los Angeles.

“Their mail comes out of Los Al--that’s where there ZIP Code should be,” she said.

New Code?

Unincorporated Rossmoor, which shares the 90720 ZIP Code with Los Alamitos, wants its own code to further distinguish it from the city.
