Young Candidates

Re “Youthful Candidates Stake Claim to Santa Clarita City Council,” Jan. 7.

Eighteen-year-old Michael Egan is quoted as asking, “Who better to relate to youth but youth itself?” A couple of possible answers: 1) the green Mighty Morphin Power Ranger, 2) Ronald McDonald. Simply being able to relate to one subgroup or another is not an appropriate basis for a candidate’s run for elective office. Egan should watch that he does not boast of something that is both meaningless and offensive to those who count among their expectations of a public official that he or she have some substantive practical or theoretical background in the problems of government. Wanting something since one was 12, or having served on what is basically a youth education project while in high school is not adequate proxy for paying one’s dues in the real world.
