Race Irrelevant for Oxnard Post
The position of Oxnard city manager should be considered solely on the experience and ability of the candidate, not on race.
From The Times, Jan. 9: “Latino leaders in Oxnard on Thursday continued to express happiness that the City Council members picked a Latino city manager. Edmund Sotelo is of Mexican descent.”
I wonder what the community would say if the quote had been: “The Anglo leaders in Oxnard continued to express happiness that the City Council members picked an Anglo city manager.”
Race should not enter into it at all, and should not be referred to when choosing a city manager or filling any other government position. We are Americans first, and to make this a racial issue is unfortunate and leaves the impression that racism is alive and well in Oxnard.
I wish Sotelo well in the city manager position and I hope that he will do a wonderful job for all the citizens of Oxnard.
