Superintendent’s Absence Is Again Topic of Meeting

For the third time in 10 days, the Laguna Beach Unified School District board will hold a closed-door meeting today to discuss the absence of Supt. Reed Montgomery.

The board’s deteriorating relationship with Montgomery, 51, worsened Friday when he declined, on advice from his lawyer, to meet with two board members of his choice. Kathryn A. Turner, school board president, said Montgomery declined to attend without legal counsel present.

“But that wasn’t what we offered,” Turner said.

Trustee Steven Rabago said he wants the board to ask Montgomery’s permission before speaking publicly about his undisclosed illness. Doing so would clear the air, he said.

If Montgomery is fired, the board must notify him in writing and give him 10 days to respond, according to his contract.

The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the school district office at 550 Blumont St.
