Lawmaker to Offer Internet Training

The Internet has more to offer than chat rooms and entertainment Web sites, it can also be an eye on government.

On Saturday, representatives from Assemblyman Robert Hertzberg’s (D-Sherman Oaks) office will hold their first free Internet training class, designed to help residents access California government sources.

“There are a lot of government resources out there,” said Russell Blank, an aide to Hertzberg and one of two people teaching the course. “We figure it’s important that voters know how to get to it.”

The course will not involve basic Internet instruction. Rather, the teachers--Blank and Hertzberg aide Stuart Waldman--will focus specifically on accessing government sites, such as the Assembly’s Web page, where voters can obtain information on pending bills and legislation and monitor their representative’s voting.

“This is our way to empower the people,” Waldman said. “If they understand where to go they can become more involved in government and more knowledgeable voters.”

Students will also learn how to access other government agencies through the Internet, such as the Department of Motor Vehicles. “There is so much you could do from your own home instead of standing in lines at the DMV,” Blank said.

Two classes are scheduled for Saturday at the Behavioral Sciences Building at Valley College, 5800 Fulton Ave. The first class runs from 1 to 2:30 p.m., the second from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Space is limited in each class and those interested are asked to make a reservation before Saturday by calling (818) 376-4040.

Along with the class training, students will be provided with a manual, “Internet Guide to California Government,” which was written by Waldman and Blank. Copies of the manual can also be obtained at Hertzberg’s district office, 6150 Van Nuys Blvd, Suite 305.
