Man Charged With Shooting at 2 Officers

A Lake View Terrace man was charged Tuesday with attempted murder for allegedly shooting at two Los Angeles police officers responding to a domestic violence call at his home last week.

Reynaldo Rivera, 46, pleaded not guilty at San Fernando Municipal Court charges of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. The charges include the special allegation that one of the bullets struck an officer.

Rivera, who was ordered held on $2 million bail, faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted of all charges.

Municipal Court Commissioner Richard L. Brand scheduled a preliminary hearing for Jan. 30.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Craig Richman said officers Donald Boon, 32, and Manuel Solis, 24, answered a domestic violence call at Rivera’s home Thursday morning. When the officers arrived, Rivera shot at them, Richman said.

“One of the rounds hit Boon in his hip and Solis was struck in the face by fragments,” Richman said.

Police recovered an assault rifle, a Colt AR-15, which they believe was used in the shooting. The weapon was banned several years ago under state and federal laws, but Rivera had registered his rifle in 1991 as required by law.

Apparently, the assault rifle malfunctioned during the attack, giving officers enough time to rescue Boon and shoot back at Rivera.

Solis, who suffered minor facial injuries from cinder-block fragments, was able to pull Boon out of the line of fire with help from Officers Frank Sanchez and David Montier.

Rivera was described by authorities as an unemployed laborer.

Police said that on the morning of the shootings, a crisis counselor from Pine Grove Hospital and Mental Health Center in Canoga Park received a telephone call from the Rivera home, saying Rivera was threatening to kill his family.

Police said officers arrived about 10:30 a.m., saw Rivera standing at the front window and ordered him out of the house.

Rivera moved, then reappeared at the side of the house, where he allegedly started firing at the officers.

Rivera’s relatives declined to comment outside the courtroom Tuesday.
