Board Member Wants to Be Superintendent
Edward Decker, a board member with the Newport-Mesa Unified School District, wants to be its next superintendent.
Decker recently announced he will put his name in as a candidate to replace Mac Bernd, who left Newport-Mesa’s top post last month.
Board members recently hired a consultant to help them begin a nationwide search for Bernd’s replacement. They also are assembling a committee of teachers, district employees and parents to interview potential candidates.
As a member of the board, Decker will have to excuse himself from any discussion regarding the search for the new superintendent.
Board members said Decker, a 58-year-old administrator at Coastline College who is serving his second term on the board, won’t receive any preferential treatment from his colleagues.
“We’ll treat him like the rest of the candidates,” board President Jim Ferryman said.
“We’ll see who is best for the district.”
