Council Agrees to Reduce Heil Avenue Speed Limit

Within several months, the speed limit on Heil Avenue will be reduced; some residents had warned that the current speed limit could lead to a disaster.
The City Council this week unanimously approved an ordinance that would reduce the speed limit to 35 mph along the entire stretch of Heil Avenue. Currently, the street has speed limits of 40 and 45 mph.
For several months, residents have complained to city officials that street has been the scene of several accidents and near-accidents because motorists speed without regard for pedestrians.
Last month, the city studied the requests and traffic patterns before determining that a speed reduction was needed.
New speed-limit signs are expected to be installed by late February or early March, after the ordinance is read a second time at the next City Council meeting.
