Relocation of Waste Center Approved Over Protests
A plan to relocate a collection facility for household hazardous waste won approval Wednesday from the city’s Planning Commission, despite objections from some neighbors.
The county-operated hazardous waste collection facility and a public recycling center will be combined in one location at La Palma Avenue and Blue Gum Street, within Anaheim Disposal’s operations. The household hazardous waste facility has been in operation across the street from the new site since 1990 and has had no reported incidents.
The move is an effort to improve accessibility to the centers and increase safety by separating public vehicles from trash trucks, disposal company officials said.
Two residents spoke in favor of the move, but residents from a nearby condominium complex submitted a petition signed by more than 140 people against it. Residents said that it would threaten their health, bring noise and fumes and affect their property values.
But a county official said the facility poses no public health threat.
