Police Begin Issuing Citations to Truants

Share

Compton police and school district officials began issuing citations to truants Tuesday, police said.

“Minors who are on the streets without parental permission are deprived of an educational opportunity as well as becoming susceptible to criminal behavior,” said Compton Police Chief Hourie L. Taylor.

The City Council has enacted an anti-loitering ordinance aimed at school-age minors. Youths who are not in school between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. will be cited and taken back to school, officials said.

Minors who are cited and a parent must then appear in Juvenile Traffic Court in Long Beach, where a fine of almost $700 could be imposed. A judge can also require the parent and minor to complete a special course on teens in trouble.
