Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat arrived in Washington on Wednesday as U.S. and Israeli leaders reported progress toward the next step in the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians.

Arafat flew in as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was about to leave after talks Tuesday with President Clinton on new Israeli troop withdrawals in the West Bank and Palestinian security efforts.

“We made some headway, and we’re going to work with Mr. Arafat tomorrow, and then we’re going to see if there’s some way we can put them [the positions] together,” Clinton said in a television interview.
