Senior Citizens Help Launch Wellness Program
About 25 senior citizens on Monday were the first to try out a new wellness education program that provides free health screening and education to adults 50 and older.
The “Friends for Health” van, sponsored by Bay Harbor Hospital and Bay Harbor Hospital Foundation, visited the Carson Community Center to conduct an “Ask Your Pharmacist” seminar in which participants asked questions about medications and the side effects of combining drugs. In addition, the senior citizens received pamphlets on other topics such as heart disease, nutrition and arthritis.
Marilyn Snyder, the hospital foundation’s manager of education, said the program was launched in response to a survey in which South Bay residents said health care was not convenient for older residents.
Snyder said the van, which carries health information and resources and a registered nurse who conducts screenings, will target senior citizen and community centers, mobile home parks and churches.
“This is the latest addition to a continuum of services,” Snyder said. “It’s part of our ongoing dedication to fill our mission of providing much-needed outreach health services to the community.”
The Friends for Health Program is serving residents in Harbor City, Wilmington, San Pedro, Carson, Gardena, Torrance and Lomita.
