Polytechnic High Leads State in Sending Graduates to UCLA

Long Beach Polytechnic High School had more seniors admitted to UCLA than any other secondary school in the state, school officials announced.

Sixty-six students, about 10% of the graduating class, were accepted to the Westwood campus which, after UC Berkeley, has the highest admission standards in the University of California system.

Fifty of the future Bruins were enrolled in Polytechnic’s rigorous Program of Additional Curricular Experiences for gifted and academically talented students, said the program’s coordinator, Richard Garretson.

“One-third of our PACE seniors were accepted by UCLA,” said Garretson. “That is quite extraordinary.”
