Gunfire Kills 9 in Southern Mexico

Nine people were killed in weekend attacks in Mexico’s southwestern state of Guerrero, including six members of a family executed by masked gunmen, officials said Tuesday.

Twenty masked men in military-style uniforms Sunday dragged six members of a family out of their homes and shot them to death in the street in the remote village of Las Palancas, about 125 miles southwest of Mexico City.

All six victims were male members of the Rauda family, three of them brothers, officials said. The victims’ ages were unknown.

“It seems [the killers] were wearing masks. . . . We only know there are six dead, one of them a minor,” said Alejandro Uriostegui, secretary-general of the nearby town of Ciudad Altamirano.

Last month, six people were slain by masked gunmen in a similar attack in Las Palancas.

In a separate incident Sunday, three masked gunmen reportedly were killed during a failed attempt to kidnap Vicente Adame Reyna, an aide to the mayor of Atoyac, about 35 miles northwest of Acapulco.

Adame and his 27-year-old son fired at the assailants with their own guns, killing three and forcing the remaining three gunmen to flee. Adame and his son were wounded in the incident but were in stable condition at a nearby clinic, officials said.
