Santa Ana College is one of four Southern California community colleges, and 13 nationwide, that will share about $3 million in government grants to help Latino students.

Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Andrew M. Cuomo announced the recipients in a meeting with leaders of national Latino organizations in Washington on Friday.

The agency’s Hispanic-Serving Institutions Work Study Program will assist students hoping to establish careers in community service. All students receiving grants under the program, about 114, are from low-income families, Cuomo said in a statement.

Community colleges receiving the grants offer programs that prepare students for careers in community development, administration of justice, early childhood education and social service delivery, HUD officials said.

About nine students at each of the community colleges will receive money for tuition and books, along with stipends for work projects. Each student can receive a maximum of $12,200 for each of the two years it takes to complete an associate’s degree.

Under the plan, Santa Ana will receive $237,600 for the scholarship program. The other Southern California colleges receiving the grants are Los Angeles Trade Technical College, East Los Angeles College and Los Angeles Harbor College.
