The Performing Arts Center at Cal State Northridge is looking for volunteers to serve as ushers at events and to organize special programs and activities. The San Fernando Valley Literacy Council needs volunteers to help adults improve their reading and writing skills. Tutor training will be held Thursday, Saturday and July 23 and July 25 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The council is also looking for teachers for English as a Second Language sessions. ESL training will be held Saturday and July 25 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. All training courses will be held at the First Methodist Church, 6260 Tyrone Ave., Van Nuys. The Organization for the Needs of the Elderly is seeking volunteers to assist in its weekly Sunday morning farmers market at the Mark Taper Intergenerational Center, 17400 Victory Blvd., Encino. Duties include directing traffic in the parking lot. Call (818) 705-2345.
