Hot Spell Expected for Next 10 Days

A floppy sun hat and SPF 30 sunscreen just aren’t going to cut it this week as triple-digit temperatures roll into Southern California and stay--like unwelcome guests--for at least 10 days.

Forecasters are calling for near-record temperatures in the San Fernando Valley for days to come and warn that the heat might reach dangerous levels in Palm Springs and other desert areas. The mercury in Death Valley is expected to hit 123 degrees today.

But Orange County is getting a bit of a break. Temperatures here are expected to top out in the low to mid-90s through the weekend.

“This isn’t unusual at all,” said meteorologist Kevin Stenson of WeatherData Inc., which provides forecasts for The Times. In Orange County, he said, “you usually get a couple of these heat snaps during the summer.”

Temperatures on Tuesday ranged from 77 in Newport Beach to 84 in Irvine, with similar highs expected today. Lifeguards at local beaches said they were preparing for a busy weekend.

Officials warn that seeking refuge in a shady spot may provide a respite, but shade doesn’t guarantee protection from the sun’s ultraviolet rays, the primary cause of skin cancer and sunburn.
