First Lady Solicits Tubman Home Aid

Saying all Americans “should be hearing the voice of Harriet Tubman in our ears,” Hillary Rodham Clinton urged people to join an effort to restore the famous abolitionist’s home. The first lady visited the two-story, red brick house in Auburn as part of her bus tour of historic places. Tubman, who fled slavery in Maryland in 1849, led more than 300 people to freedom in 19 trips as a conductor on the Underground Railroad, a network to aid escaping slaves.
