The National Science Foundation awarded Loyola Marymount University two grants worth $78,000 for biology and engineering research, officials announced.

A portion of the money will pay for an ultracentrifuge, a device that permits researchers to isolate minuscule components inside cells for molecular biology experiments.

Funds also will go to buy a hydrogen furnace, an instrument that allows students to study refractory metals. The grant will be matched with funds from the university.
