Red Cross Class Offers Baby-Sitting Basics
Baby-sitting requires more than just watching TV and raiding the refrigerator these days. A new daylong course offered by the Red Cross trains teenage sitters in everything from CPR to the Heimlich maneuver for infants.
It’s so popular, Red Cross officials said, they have had to set up a new session for Aug. 21.
“Baby-sitters’ training not only equips youth with the knowledge of how to keep children and themselves safe, but also gives parents peace of mind when leaving their children at home with a baby-sitter,” said Debbie Graves, director of health and safety services.
The teenagers learn about discipline, infant care and problem-solving, along with emergency health care.
They leave the classroom with a Red Cross certificate and pin, a baby-sitter’s handbook, a first-aid kit, a flashlight and an emergency note pad.
Students must bring the $40 fee and a parental permission slip to the class, which runs from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Red Cross, 600 N. Parkcenter Drive, Santa Ana.
