Caravelle Hotel Reopens in Vietnam

The Caravelle Hotel--a favorite haunt of journalists, politicians and adventurers during the Vietnam War--has reopened in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) after a $65-million renovation.

American guests expecting to stir some memories won’t find much that is familiar, except the 10th-floor lounge. The Caravelle, which the Communists renamed the Doc Lap after the Americans fled Saigon in 1975, was gutted to a shell for the face lift.

The opening of the 335-room downtown hotel comes at a time when tourism has slowed to a trickle in Vietnam. Construction on the nearby Marriott and Grand Hyatt hotels has been suspended, and hotel occupancy in Ho Chi Minh City has fallen below 40%.

Introductory room rates at the Caravelle start at $69, through Aug. 31; then regular rates begin at $185. Reservations: telephone (800) 344-1212.
