Managers Sought for Census Bureau Office

As part of a massive national effort to count all the nation’s residents and where they are as of April 1, 2000, the U.S. Census Bureau is recruiting managers for its new Van Nuys office, officials announced.

The office, scheduled to open in October in the federal building, 6230 Van Nuys Blvd., will be responsible for counting residents within the estimated 156,000 housing units in its territory, said David Posley, head of recruiting for the new location.

The bureau already has two offices in Van Nuys, one at 14350 Sherman Way to oversee daily operations in Southern California and another at 15400 Sherman Way to coordinate Census 2000 efforts in 19 counties in Southern California and other U.S. territories in the Pacific Ocean.

“The census bureau is usually a relatively small division within the Department of Commerce, but it really swells up like a giant balloon every 10 years,” Van Nuys bureau spokesman Jim Foy said.

The bureau is currently looking for four managers to run the new office and will be hiring other clerical support staff beginning in October.

By the end of 1999, about 15 local census offices are scheduled to open in Los Angeles County. In California, an estimated 25,000 people will be hired and trained for census work, Posley said.

Nationwide, more that 400,000 workers will be hired in the next two years to conduct the 22nd census, then analyze and present the final count to the president and Congress by Dec. 31, 2000.
