ORANGE COUNTY EARNINGS

Broadcom Corp.: The Irvine semiconductor maker, in its first earnings report since its huge debut as a public company in May, reported a $7.7-million second-quarter profit. A year ago, the company lost $1.1 million, or 4 cents a share. Revenue climbed to $45.2 million from $5.4 million. For the first half, net income was $15.4 million, or 35 cents a share, contrasted with a loss of $1.8 million, or 7 cents a share, for the 1997 first half. Revenue grew to $80.5 million from $10.4 million.
