7:30 pm: Literature

Raymond Chandler’s writings evoke a vivid image of Los Angeles with a hard-edged romanticism that has been much copied. The noir hero also created one of the most memorable characters in detective fiction, Philip Marlowe. In commemoration of Chandler’s birthday (the author was born 110 years ago today), five of L.A.’s contemporary crime writers will read selected passages from his work at “A Raymond Chandler Birthday Celebration.” After the readings, participating authors--Jen Banbury, Michael Connelly, Robert Crais, Gar Anthony Haywood and Robert Ward--will discuss Chandler’s influence on their own works and answer questions.
