Swinging With the Rhumba Bums

The Derby celebrated its fifth anniversary last week with an open bar party and a live CNN broadcast featuring Steve Lucky & the Rhumba Bums, who commute to the Derby from San Francisco each week to play the lush nightclub, keeping the old swing torch aglow. The August issue of Playboy magazine selected the Derby as the hottest night spot in America to pick up a gal (hey, someone must’ve seen “Swingers”). . . .

Speaking of swingers, the gay club Rage in West Hollywood has got to be one of the fiercest dance clubs around, not even slowing on a Sunday during the recent heat wave, when it was jam-packed with sweaty aerobicizers. . . .

I guess it’s no secret Sunday ain’t no day of rest in Hollywood, and this weekend is no exception when the Fang Club’s Victorian Masquerade Ball at LunaPark goes heads up against the Shout! vs. Coven 13 party at the World Club. So you just gotta decide what you’re feeling that day--will it be masked drag or hanging with the Goth-mod squad?. . . .
