Re “Air Board Seeks Tighter Auto Emission Limits,” July 18:

Guess what? That 1965 Chevy Malibu is still on the road and it’s still spewing over half a ton of smog-forming exhaust into the air! Anybody who’s choked on the freeway behind a 10-year-old Mercedes diesel or a 20-year-old Honda Civic or any other similarly overripe vehicle knows there are worse problems out there than new cars that put out 100 pounds of pollution. It seems a bit superfluous to focus on the manufacturers, who are easy targets, rather than take the hard action of removing old cars from the road.
