Praise for Postel: The International Telecommunications Union has bestowed its silver medal on Jon Postel last week for his central role in the Internet’s success. Postel, head of the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority at USC’s Information Sciences Institute, received the award last week at INET ‘98, the Internet Society’s annual meeting.

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, or IANA, is in charge of the mundane but critical task of making sure every Internet address has a unique identifying number.
