Ervin Pitches In as Vigilantes End Chico’s Winning Streak

The Vigilantes ended their three-game losing streak and Chico’s nine-game winning streak with a 6-1 victory Sunday in Chico.

Phil Kernan drove in two runs and Sam Voita, Manny Gagliano and Robert Muro also drove in a run each for the Vigilantes (4-7).

Kent Ervin (4-4) pitched six innings for the victory. He gave up five hits and an unearned run. Kirk Irvine pitched the seventh and eighth and Josh Belovsky worked a perfect ninth.

Kernan had an RBI double and Voita drove in another run with a groundout in the ninth as the Vigilantes scored twice to take a 6-1 lead.

Chico is 9-2.

Rob Kish of Port Orange, Fla., moved into second place during the fourth day of the the Race Across America.

Kish, a three-time winner and in his 13th race, had been well back but started his push forward Sunday.

Gerry Tatrai of Australia, who has been in the lead since late Thursday, passed through time station 19 (Quitaque, Texas) at 5:26 p.m. Sunday. Kish, the only other rider to reach the station that is 1,252 miles into the race, reached it at 9:05 p.m.

Four riders had reached time station 18 (Friona, Texas) led by Tom Buckley of Keokuk, Iowa.

Seanna Hogan of San Jose, who had been in second for most of the three days, fell to ninth.

Sara Reiling of L’Equipe Irvine Diving won the girls’ 16-18 platform event at the U.S. Zone E Junior National qualifying meet at the Mission Viejo Aquatics Center.

Kristin Littell of the Mission Viejo Nadadores was second in the girls’ 13 and under one-meter competition. Tiffany Manning (Nadadores) was second in the girls’ 14-15 one-meter and Ray Vincent (Nadadores) was second in the boys’ 16-18 platform.
