Camp Fund Enriched Her Young Life

Re “Time Out” (May 25): I was a recipient of such a wonderful camp fund. I lived in New York City. It was 1938, and I was 5 years old, and the fund was known as the New York Herald Tribune Camp Fund.

I was able to go away for two weeks to Akron, Pa. The Tribune had a special program to send such young children to individual homes for at least two weeks during the summer. The first year, I went for two weeks, but after that, my summer vacations grew to two months. (Of course, the Herald Tribune did not sponsor those vacations.)

I can’t imagine how my life would be now without the years I spent my summer vacations with those most wonderful people from Pennsylvania. It didn’t matter that I was a kid from the streets of New York staying with people who had farms and lived such a different lifestyle. It didn’t matter that they were Mennonites and couldn’t understand the lifestyle of this little girl. They just loved me anyway.
