Neighbors’ Dispute Results in Shooting

An apparent dispute over construction work ended in gunfire Sunday when a man shot his downstairs neighbor in the left arm during an alleged break-in, police said.
Police went to an apartment complex in the 15000 block of Brookhurst Avenue at 10:18 p.m. after Jeffery Gaskill, 20, allegedly shot his neighbor, Etimani Fuga, 28, with a handgun, Lt. Phil Marshall said.
The men allegedly had been fighting and exchanging threats over construction work that Gaskill was doing on Fuga’s balcony, Marshall said. Fuga allegedly broke into Gaskill’s home and was shot once in the arm.
Fuga was treated at UCI Medical Center for his injury. No arrests have been made as police continue to investigate.
“It’s not real cut and dry,” Marshall said. “Did Mr. Fuga commit a crime? Did Mr. Gaskill commit a crime? We’re trying to determine if it was a case of self-defense.”
