Bloomberg News

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. agreed to pay $9 million in criminal fines and plead guilty to charges that it systematically dumped oil in the ocean from 1990 to 1994 and deceived U.S. Coast Guard investigators. The plea agreement resolves charges against the company in Miami and Puerto Rico, although the company said it could face additional charges as an investigation by the Justice Department continues. The fine is the largest ever for an environmental crimes case involving cruise ships, the department said. Royal Caribbean President Jack Williams called the Miami-based cruise line’s conduct “inexcusable” and said the company accepts full responsibility. Royal Caribbean said it has developed a comprehensive environmental compliance program. Its shares rose 25 cents to close at $70.25 on the New York Stock Exchange.
