On Tuesday, I did something I thought would never happen in my life: vote for a Republican. Instead of wasting a meaningless vote for virtually unopposed Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Barbara Boxer, I crossed party lines (experiencing the guilt of betrayal, mixed with the thrill of illicit activity), and voted for Matt Fong--obviously the superior Republican candidate and an equitable opponent. But it was a brief dance with the devil. Boxer gets my real vote in the fall.

George Skelton’s June 1 column on why Jane Harman’s campaign for governor failed overlooked the most damning evidence of all: that bit of videotape in which she declared herself “the best Republican in the Democratic Party.” For a woman courting the women’s vote to link herself even symbolically with the party of Susan Carpenter-McMillan, Rep. Helen Chenoweth (R-Idaho) and Phyllis Schlafly--without considering how it could come back to haunt her--displays a remarkable combination of stupidity and shortsightedness. She never had a chance.

Why do we bother to publish the Voter Information Guide? The melancholy fact is that few voters even read it. Take Prop. 225, for example: Even the writer of the argument in favor of this measure stated that passage would “likely result only in needless and costly litigation.” Yet results show 53% of the electorate voted for it.

The flag-draped coffin in Tuesday’s paper calling for us to vote sent chills all over me (cartoon by Michael Ramirez). I warmed up by running to my polling place. Thanks.
