1 Suspect in Police Killing Found Dead

BLUFF, Utah — One of three suspects on the run since a fatal shootout with police in southwestern Colorado last week was found dead Thursday with a gunshot wound to his head.
The camouflage-clad body was found near where a police officer--responding to a call that a man had shot at a passerby--was wounded earlier. Two of the suspects in last week’s killing of a Cortez, Colo., police officer remained at large.
San Juan County Sheriff Mike Lacey said late Thursday that the man’s identity had not been confirmed but that it was one of the suspects. Colorado Gov. Roy Romer said at a news conference in Denver the man had been shot at close range between the eyes. It was either a suicide or he was shot at very close range, Romer said.
Officers also found a number of pipe bombs in the area. The 300 residents of Bluff were being evacuated as a precaution.
