Clinic to Raise Funds for Medicine, Services

A Van Nuys Boulevard charity called MEND, which stands for Meet Each Need with Dignity, will hold a “serv-a-thon” today to raise funds and provide residents in need with new shoes, mammograms, clothing, haircuts and other services.

Serv-a-thon volunteers found sponsors who pledged to donate money to MEND, which will use the funds to purchase medication that is dispensed to low-income patients through the MEND health clinic.

“The cost of medicine just has skyrocketed,” said Marianne Hill, programs director at MEND.

Organizers likened the event to an open house.

Though the shoe giveaway required recipients to preregister, services such as cholesterol and high blood pressure tests will be available, Hill said. For those who might miss out on the shoes today, “We have services four days a week to get clothing--Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday,” said MEND clothing manager Lupe Acosta.

The event will also feature “food, entertainment, fun things for the kids,” Acosta said. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 13460 Van Nuys Blvd.

MEND constantly seeks volunteers, Hill said. For more information, call (818) 897-2443.
