Temple’s Special Events for June

Jewish Families of Camarillo--Temple Ner Ami will host three special events this month.

A New York Night fund-raiser tonight will include dinner, dancing and an auction. Tickets are $85 per person.

On June 16, the temple will host an “Israel at 50” birthday celebration at 7 p.m. The event is free to members and $5 to nonmembers. Refreshments will be served.

On June 19, guest Rabbi Stuart Lasher will conduct the Shabbat service at 7:30, followed by refreshments.

‘50-Day Spiritual Adventure’

Ascension Lutheran Church of Thousand Oaks will begin a “50-day spiritual adventure” Sunday designed to help “tapped-out Christians tap into the miracles God has available today,” Pastor Willis Morerer said.

The spiritual growth series will run through July 26 and will be built around weekly themes, such as finding tension’s good side, Christian hospitality, pulpit/pew mutual support and praying with fasting.

Adults, teens and children at Ascension Lutheran will complete a workbook adventure journal.

The public is invited to attend the “spiritual adventure.” Worship is at 6 p.m. Saturdays and at 8:30, 9:45 and 11 a.m. Sundays, with Sunday school for all ages at 9:45 a.m. The church is at 1600 E. Hillscrest Drive. For more information, call 495-0406.

Service Features Readings, Songs

The Ventura Contemplative Community has scheduled a taize style ecumenical worship service of songs, readings and silent prayer Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ventura.

The chants sung by worshipers inspire and focus devotion, said Tom Johnston of the community.

Instrumental accompaniment at the 6:45 p.m. service will be led by Ron Zell, Trinity Lutheran’s music minister. The church is at 196 N. Ashwood. For more information, call 647-6831.

Men’s Ministry to Serve Breakfast

The men’s ministry of Calvary Community Church in Westlake Village will cook and serve a men’s breakfast at 7 a.m. June 13 at the church.

The $9 tickets may be purchased after this weekend’s services at the church office or at the breakfast.

Guest speaker Louis Zamperini is a former Olympic athlete and World War II captain who survived 47 days adrift on a raft after his plane’s crash in the Pacific. He was captured by the Japanese and spent more than two years in a POW camp. He will talk about how his Christian faith has played a vital role in his life.

TV Host-Author to Speak in Ojai

Tony Campolo, an internationally known speaker, author, television host and sociologist, will speak three consecutive nights at the bowl in Ojai’s Libbey Park, beginning June 14.

The “Festival of Faith” is sponsored by the Ojai Valley Ministerial Assn., which is made up of 12 Ojai Valley churches.

Campolo’s June 14 talk, titled “Knowing God,” addresses how to get in touch with God in everyday life.

The June 15 event, “How to Love,” will be about moving beyond romance and engaging in the kind of intimacy that makes life worthwhile.

“Making a Difference” on June 16 considers how to give meaning to life and find fulfillment.

A free will offering will be used to help the poor in Ojai, according to the ministerial association.

Chabad, Academy Plan Banquet

Chabad and the Conejo Jewish Academy will hold their annual banquet June 14 at the Warner Center Marriott Hotel in Woodland Hills.

The banquet will focus on Chabad’s rapid growth in the Conejo Valley. Stuart Greenburg, active in community affairs since moving to the Conejo area in 1986, will receive a lifetime achievement award.

The banquet will include a performances by comedian Red Buttons, singer Moshe Yess and the Skye Michaels Orchestra. For more information or reservations for the banquet, which costs $150 per person, call Chabad at (818) 991-0991.

Anniversary Concert by Guitarist

Ventura’s Jewish community will welcome songwriter-guitarist Debbie Friedman at a concert in celebration of the congregation’s 60th anniversary June 20. Friedman recently performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City, combining melodies in the American folk tradition with lyrics derived from Hebrew prayers.

Friedman’s concert will also honor Dr. Ralph Moses, who has served as Temple Beth Torah’s cantor for many years. Moses, whose family helped found the Ventura County Jewish Council and Temple Beth Torah, will also be honored on June 19 during a special congregational Shabbat dinner and service.

Church Offers Singing Lessons

The Oxnard Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer is offering free lessons to singers.

The senior choir director, Olaf Frodsham, will offer the lessons. Frodsham is professor emeritus of music education and voice at Occidental College in Los Angeles and director emeritus of choral music at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.
