Charter School

Share

“A Mixed Report Card for Charter School,” June 1.

At a time when almost every report about public education is either controversial or negative, we have a school in the Valley--the Vaughn Next Century Learning Center--that has a 95% attendance record with better test scores than comparative schools, even though 80% of the student body speaks limited English.

Furthermore, we have a decisive and strong educational leader in the principal of Vaughn, Yvonne Chan. The June 1 Times article accurately states that she is an astute manager of resources who attracts large grants from the community and has earned the loyalty of parents and those faculty who were willing to give up their seniority to stay at the school.

All of us should be proud of Chan, the faculty, students and parents of Vaughn charter school for the achievements they have made, and we should not leave it to national organizations to provide the recognition and acclaim they so clearly deserve.

Let us support the renewal of their charter so that they will be able to continue their extraordinary progress in serving the educational needs of Valley children and families.
