Red Cross Chapter Recognizes Volunteers

* At a recent ceremony, Ventura County Chapter of the American Red Cross recognized more than 75 volunteers for their service.

This year’s honorees included Irma Kackert, 82, of Thousand Oaks, who began volunteering 55 years ago and is still teaching swimming.

Also recognized for longtime service were:

Herb Frost, a 40-year-volunteer, and Nancy Staerzl, a 35-year volunteer, both of Ventura; Oxnard residents Phyllis Villarreal, a 30-year volunteer, and Ron Villarreal, a 25-year volunteer; Karon Carpenter of Simi Valley, a 30-year volunteer.

Foundation Presents Lee Welsh Scholarship

* Andrea Sanchez, a graduating senior at St. Bonaventure High School, was awarded the $1,000 Lee Welsh Memorial Scholarship by the Mesa Education Foundation. The award is given annually to a former Mesa Union Junior High School student, based on academic merit and citizenship. The award was created in 1988 in memory of Lee Welsh, a teacher at Mesa Union, who died in a boating accident in 1987.

Tourism Bureau Announces Annual Awards

* Oxnard Tourism Bureau announced the winners of its annual awards:

Tourism Merit Award--Allan Moore of Moore Consulting, designer of the city’s web site.

Tourism Education Award--Mike Daly of FLS Language Centres, for promoting Oxnard and bringing international tourism business to the city.

Volunteer of the Year Award--Ginger Roth, a docent at the Carnegie Art Museum and Heritage Square.

Business Tourism Award--the Connally family, which operates Island Packers.
